An icon of St Thomas of Canterbury made by Peter Murphy of Broadstairs, Kent

The prototype for this icon is a mosaic in the Cathedral of Monreale in Sicily, which was completed within a few of years of the saint's murder. The wife of King William of Sicily who commissioned the mosaic was Joan daughter of Henry II of England.  She knew Becket as a child and the mosaic icon is therefore thought to be a genuine likeness

Christ Pantocrator           Ian Knowles

The figure is monumental, radiant with Divine Light, witnessing to Jesus as true God and true Man. A figure of strength and directness, Jesus is here Righteous Judge and Lover of Mankind, bringing the blessing of redemption for all who turn to Him. Commissioned by an Irish family, the decorative motifs are of Celtic origin.

Ian Knowles is an Oxford theology graduate who studied iconography under Egon Sendler and Aidan Hart.   As well as commissions for panel icons, he undertakes work voluntarily in the Holy Land restoring churches and gives classes in iconography to help revive traditional iconography here.
